Buttermere village

Buttermere village sits between Buttermere and Crummock Water, in a spectacular location surrounded by the high fells. The village is largely dominated by tourism, with two hotels (the Fish and the Bridge), two tea rooms (one serving splendid farm-made ice cream), and a Youth Hostel. The valley is unusual in that it still contains most of its original farms, spread out as far as Gatesgarth at the foot of Honister Pass. The tiny Church of St James contains a memorial to Wainwright, in the form of a window facing towards Haystacks.

Directions: Buttermere village is on the only roads in the valley and can be reached from the Vale or Lorton or over Newlands or Honister Passes.
