North Stainmore is a small hamlet located just to the west of the summit of the A 66 road over the North Pennines. The main road used to run through the village, but the new A 66 now runs just to the south (the eastern part of the old road is still in use, while the western part now ends just before the A 66). The road north from the hamlet comes to an end close to an attractive waterfall and at the junction of several paths that climb up onto the high moors to the north.
