Penhill and the Heights of Hazely

Stage two of our guide to the Hadrian's Wall National Trail takes us from the shores of the Solway Firth into the centre of Carlisle. Once again there are no Roman remains visible on this section of the walk, but there is more varient than on the first section, with part of the walk crossing the farming country west of Carlisle and the rest following the line of the River Eden.

Ascent: 300ft
Length: 7 miles

This is a new National Trail and so is still likely to change from time to time. Our guide describes the walk as it was when we did it, but obey any divertion signs you find along the way. There was a diversion in place on the section around Kirkandrews on Eden when I did the walk, although that may have gone by now.

Stage One left us at the village of Dykesfield. We now continue east along the road through Burgh by Sands.
2: NY 331 590
Follow the road east out of Burgh by Sands until we reach a footpath on the left. Turn onto this footpath, which runs north alongside one field, and then turns right to follow the line of Hadrian's Wall as it runs across the top of a small hill - first running by a broken hedgeline and then in a narrow lane which leads us to the village of Beaumont.
3: NY 348 594
Just before the village the lane jinks slighlty to the left, then reaches a street at the northern end of the village. Turn right onto this street and follow it to the small triangular village green. There turn left, on the street heading to St. Anns Well and the River Eden. At the eastern edge of the village turn right onto a footpath that runs through some trees on a bank overlooking the river.

River EdenThis path emerges from the trees just behind the first buildings in Kirkandrews-on-Eden (although we never actually enter the village). Here the River Eden sweeps away to the left beginning a loop that will bring it into Carlisle. Our path follows the edge of some higher ground that cuts across the base of this loop. This segment of the walk falls into two broad sections.

The first follows the line of a steep bank that marks the edge of this higher ground. For most of the time our path runs along the top of the bank, but soon after we leave the trees the path descends down to the base of the bank and follows it to the southern end of the village. There the path crosses a farm lane that runs down a gap in the bank, before climbing back up onto the bank top and following it for the next third of a mile, until we reach the end of the bank.

At the end of the bank, the path passes into the western tip of the next field, then runs along the right hand side of the field down to a small stream. Cross that stream on a small footbridge. This brings us to the edge of two fields - our path runs to the left of the hedge between these two fields, passing under some electicity cables. Towards the end of the first field our path turns into a farm track, which we follow into the village of Grinsdale.

5: NY 368 580
Old railway bridge CarlisleIn Grinsdale turn right onto the road, and then left onto the footpath at the edge of the village. We now follow the line of the River Eden all the way into and through Carlisle. On this first section we follow the river as it curves around to the left all the way to a old railway bridge, then curves around to the right, passing around the edge of a sports field.
6: NY 394 567
Eventually the path reaches the car park attached to the sports field, just at the point where the River Caldew runs into the Eden. Follow the car park alongside the River Caldew until we reach a bridge over this river. Cross over this bridge, and then go to stage three.
