South Uist

South Uist is a large island in the southern Outer Hebrides. The island forms part of the long ground that include Benbecula and North Uist. It is a long fairly narrow island, running north-south, with high ground in the east and flatter ground to the west. The main road runs along the flatter western part of the island, some way back from the long beach that takes up most of the western shore.

The island has a population of under 2,000, mainly living on the western half of the island. Amongst the notable places are Howmore, with its collection of ruined churches and chapels and Milton, the birthplace of Flora MacDonald.
